For Light sleeper, Ash Kilmartin has removed all the curtains from her Rotterdam apartment, and posted these to ST PAUL St Gallery for installation in the front window of the Gallery, FrontBox. Throughout the duration of the exhibition the interior lighting of FrontBox will be switched off only during the Gallery’s opening hours, suggesting a different pattern of work and dormancy, in a Northern hemisphere timezone 12 hours behind. Kilmartin’s recent works focus on specific items, places, and spatial conventions as a way to think about the qualities of time and labour. She is interested in how objects might store and communicate memory or history.

Kilmartin is currently based in Rotterdam where she is working toward an MFA at Piet Zwart Institute. Recent solo exhibitions include Artefact and Letter, TCB, Melbourne, 2015; Variables and binaries, the Physics Room, Christchurch, 2014; Kilmartin House Museum, Studio 12 at Gertrude Contemporary, Melbourne, 2013, and The Perpetual Planner, RM, Auckland, 2012. She has participated in group exhibitions including 124,908, part of the 2nd Tbilisi Triennial, Republic of Georgia, 2015; NEW15, ACCA, Melbourne, 2015; and Octopus 14: Nothing Beside Remains, Gertrude Contemporary, Melbourne, 2014.
